Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign manager stayed faithful to her girl, saying that Bill Clinton should be blamed for being a ‘jerk’ and being unfaithful in his marriage.
‘Here’s what I think about that: I think what Bill Clinton did in terms of infidelity was absolutely horrible. A shitty thing to do,’ said longtime Clinton confidante Patti Solis Doyle to Democratic strategist David Axelrod as part of his podcast, ‘The Axe Files.’
‘It was awful. You know, many of us thought about quitting after what he did,’ said Solis Doyle. ‘But when we thought about it – when I thought about it – I thought, she didn’t do anything. He is the jerk here and why would I punish her by quitting?.’
Solis Doyle also defended her boss for calling Monica Lewinsky a ‘narcissistic loony toon,’ what the former first lady had called her husband’s mistress in private after having had learned of the affair.

Patti Solis Doyle sat down and talked to David Axelrod, whose candidate Barack Obama beat Hillary Clinton in 2008
‘She said that to a friend in a personal letter, it’s not like she went on television or said it publicly,’ Solis Doyle pointed out. ‘She didn’t say anything publicly about any of [them] … and, you know, as a woman, if my husband were having some kind of extramarital affair with another woman, I’m sure I wouldn’t have very nice things to say about that woman either.’
‘That’s just normal,’ Solis Doyle added.
Solis Doyle spent over 45 minutes talking to Axelrod for the podcast, shedding some light on ‘Hillaryland,’ a nickname Solis Doyle came up with as a young White House staffer, and defending her ex-boss against charges being lobbed at her by Republican frontrunner Donald Trump.
Trump has called into question Hillary Clinton’s commitment to women’s rights, pointing to her husband’s past affairs and sexual misconduct and her decision to stick with him – and send him out as a surrogate on the campaign trail.
Solis Doyle, who started working for Hillary Clinton while she was still the first lady of Arkansas and her husband was ramping up his 1992 presidential bid, said the Democratic frontrunner never condemned Lewinsky – or any of the women – publicly.
‘And I think it’s its own form of sexism to somehow blame the spouse for what the husband did,’ the aide told Axelrod. ‘I think that’s its own form of sexism.’
Solis Doyle had her own idea about working with Hillary Clinton in the early ’90s.
‘He did it. She didn’t do it,’ Solis Doyle said of Bill Clinton’s White House affair with Monica Lewinsky, which is being brought up to test Hillary Clinton’s feminist credentials by GOP frontrunner Donald Trump
Patti Solis Doyle (pictured) told David Axelrod that her own relationship with Hillary Clinton has been patched up after she was fired from the campaign manager job in 2008
Having just boarded her first flight, which brought her to Little Rock, Arkansas, the Chicago native and first generation American was ‘very bummed out’ to here that she had been assigned to work for ‘Bill Clinton’s wife.’
She’s named Hillary,’ Solis Doyle recalled hearing. ‘At that time I didn’t even know what her name is.’
‘I was very disappointed,’ she added.
Though she sat down with Arkansas’ first lady and was immediately taken.
‘From the get-go I could tell she was just really smart, really strong, didn’t take any shit from anybody and was just like, “OK, here’s what I expect from you, here’s what I’d like to do, I’ve never run in a national campaign before and neither have you, so we’re going to learn this thing together,”‘ Solis Doyle recalled Hillary Clinton saying.
‘And the most important thing for me is I need to be home for my daughter Chelsea at least four nights a week and I need to go to her games, so let’s start with that premise and just go from there,’ Clinton had told her.
‘And I was like, “fantastic,”‘ Solis Doyle said.
The young Latina aide followed her boss to the White House and remembers the blowback directed at Hillary Clinton for working on policy unlike other first ladies.
‘I started working for Hillary Clinton before she was Hillary Clinton the icon,’ Solis Doyle pointed out. ‘And so we sort of grew up in politics together.’
Solis Doyle discussed the ‘absolutely unacceptable’ Lewinsky years, but also talked about how the Clintons rebuilt their marriage.
‘It was a shitty thing to do to her. But he did it. He did it. She didn’t do it,’ Solis Doyle said again.
‘I will tell you this, they love each other,’ she noted, telling Axelrod that Bill and Hillary hold hands and when he puts his hands on her shoulder she just lights up. ‘It’s a very good relationship.’
And another relationship that has since been repaired has been her own with Hillary Clinton.
After Hillary Clinton lost the Iowa caucuses in 2008 to Barack Obama and John Edwards, and then edged them both out in New Hampshire, the candidate still had to right the ship, which meant throwing campaign manager Solis Doyle overboard.
‘We got that relationship back after some time,’ Solis Doyle said. ‘It was hard.’
Now, watching the 2016 campaign go down at an arm’s distance away, the former campaign head honcho thinks her old boss is performing better.
‘I think she seems much more comfortable in her skin this time around,’ she noted, suggesting that Clinton’s poll numbers are only problematic because ‘nobody likes an inevitable frontrunner … particularly Iowa and New Hampshire.’
‘I think she’s doing a good job,’ Solis Doyle said. ‘The electorate is just really, really, angry.’
