An early morning gun battle in Baton Rouge left two officers wounded and a suspect hospitalized in critical condition Saturday.
The shootout followed a car chase that ended with the suspect wrecking his car, police said.
Police said the officers’ injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
The suspect was seriously wounded and underwent surgery at the same clinic where the two officers were listed.

A suspect led police on a car chase that ended with the man wrecking his car and shooting at police
The two unidentified officers responded to a report around 5:30am of a person damaging property near 770 Monet Drive.
When cops arrived at the scene, the suspect took off in a 2013 Dodge Avenger and a chase ensued.
Two miles down the road, near the 5600 block of Fairfields Avenue, the suspect crashed his car, police told the Advocate.
As he exited the vehicle, the suspect produced a rifle and began shooting at the two officers, striking both, police said.
One officer was struck in the stomach but protected by his bulletproof vest, while the other suffered a graze wound to the head.
Though wounded, the officers were able to return fire and struck the suspect, police said.
‘Both of these officers were very fortunate to survive this encounter,’ District Attorney Hillar Moore said.
Moore said investigators will study footage captured via squad car dashboard cameras. At least one of the officers wore a body camera, but it was not known whether it was recording during the confrontation.
The suspect, who was not identified, was on probation on a 2014 charge of cruelty to a juvenile, Moore said.
It was unclear where the suspect was hit.
