Kanye West teamed up with comedian Kyle Mooney to poke fun at himself during a Saturday Night Live skit.
West, who is now almost as famous for his Twitter rants as his music, took part in a rap battle with the SNL regular and joked about his perceived self-obsession.
After declaring ‘I hate the new Kanye, the always rude Kanye’, he continued to spit rhymes about himself in the third person and told Mooney: ‘I love you like Kanye loves Kanye.’

Doing what he does best: Kanye West made a surprise appearance on a skit on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live
At the end of the show he changed into the T-shirt he sported during New York fashion week, with his late mother’s face on the front and his late father-in-law Robert Kardashian’s face on the back.
The move came after host Melissa McCarthy and SNL’s Kate McKinnon cracked a joke about OJ Simpson, who Kardashian famously defended in his 1995 murder trial.
Playing owners of a cat rescue center, McKinnon picked up a ginger kitten and explained: ‘We call this cat O.J. because he’s orange, like the juice, and a murderer, like the athlete.’
Aspiring: The skit began with Kyle Mooney talking about his aspirations to become a rapper
Going for it: He tells co-star Beck Bennett that his plan is to battle rap Kanye
Awkward: Backstage at the show during the pretaped skit, Kyle approaches Kanye and throws down the gauntlet
Melissa McCarthy stepped out as the host of Saturday Night Live to rapturous applause and claimed it was her fifth time hosting the sketch show.
As she burst into an up-tempo song about her achievement, Kenan Thompson stepped out, dressed in a foam five costume, to correct her.
‘Melissa, you’ve only hosted four times,’ he said. ‘I googled it while I was backstage sweating in this foam five costume that you made me wear.’
Putting down bars: Kyle rapped: ‘Kanye West. You need a mint for your Kanye breath. And when I’m done with you, there’s going to be no Kanye’s left.’
Flow: The 38-year-old rapper went in on the comedian with a name centric rap that included the line: ‘I hate the new Kanye, the always rude Kanye’
Hilarious: After the rap battle Kyle said to the camera: ‘I just destroyed Kanye in a rap battle and now he’s probably really sad, but at least my career’s on fire’
‘No that’s not right,’ McCarthy insisted. ‘First one was 2011, 2013, 2014, tonight. Then last year was the 40th anniversary special. That’s five times.’
‘The 40th doesn’t count baby girl. That counts for one sixteenth of a hosting,’ Thompson explained, before handing her a commemorative jacket on a banana and an amended pair of sparkly glasses.
‘It’s like my own club. I’m a four and one sixteener,’ a delighted McCarthy exclaimed.
While the Bridesmaids star appeared in a string of SNL skits, it was West’s pre-recorded sketch that was the highlight of Saturday night.
Family first: At the end of the show, Kanye turned around to show off the back of his shirt which was dedicated to the father of his wife Kim Kardashian: Robert Kardashian
Awkward: This came right after a skit where castmember Kate McKinnon picked up a ginger kitten and explained: ‘We call this cat O.J. because he’s orange, like the juice, and a murderer, like the athlete’
The rapper, who also performed High Lights and Ultra Light Beams on the show, took part in a rap battle with Kyle Mooney.
Mooney, playing a wannabe rap artist, bumped into West backstage and told him: ‘Kanye West. You need a mint for your Kanye breath. And when I’m done with you, there’s going to be no Kanye’s left.’
West immediately hit back with the lines: ‘I miss the old Kanye, chop up the soul Kanye, say from the go Kanye, in with the flow Kanye. I hate the new Kanye, the always rude Kanye, the bad move Kanye.’
He continued: ‘You know we love Kanye, you used to love Kanye. Guess what? I love you like Kanye loves Kanye.’
Moving and grooving: As he was booked to perform on the show, Kanye performed new track High Light
Debut: He also performed new track Ultra Light Beam for the first time
Also featuring: Kanye also brought out Chance The Rapper during the performance
Bringing back planking? At one point, Kanye laid face down during the performance
Big deal: At the end of the performance Kanye yelled that his album was now out on his website and Tidal
As West walked off to huge cheers, Mooney said: ‘I just destroyed Kanye in a rap battle and now he’s probably really sad, but at least my career’s on fire.’
McCarthy, meanwhile, had viewers in stitches when she played an audience member at a horror movie test screening.
Night vision footage from the cinema showed her spitting soda over the row in front of her and tipping her drink backwards over Kenan Thompson during one scary scene.
She also vomited, punched Vanessa Bayer in the head, ripped Pete Davidson’s t-shirt off and screamed ‘I’m p***ing myself’, before running out of the fire exit.
Celebration: Melissa McCarthy was the host of the show as she celebrated her fifth time doing it
Aww: She was informed by castmember Kenan Thompson that it was actually her fourth time
Shady lady: He gave her a pair of sunglasses to commemorate her fourth and one-sixteenth time doing the gig
Hilarious: One of the earlier sketches featured hidden camera footage of Melissa watching a horror film as she ripped Pete Davidson’s shirt off
Angry: At one point , the funnywoman said she had soiled herself
Other skits saw her playing a mother sitting down with her family for an awkward movie night, a woman unsuccessfully trying out pick up techniques in a club and a racist bus passenger.
Making small talk with Leslie Jones on the bus, she said: ‘I don’t love a lot of black movies, like the one where she poops in the pie. What is that called? Is that called Poop Pie?’
‘No it’s called The Help,’ an infuriated Jones said.
McCarthy continued: ‘There’s another one I love. It’s got slaves in it. Is it “Eight Years I Got a Slave”?’
Awkward: Another sketch saw Melissa as a mother who happened to watch a sex scene with her son and husband
Dynamic duo: She and Leslie Jones also had a rather humourous sketch of an awkward bus interaction
‘No, 12 Years a Slave,’ Jones corrected.
‘Oh was it 12 years? I didn’t see the whole thing,’ McCarthy said.
There was also a surprise cameo appearance from Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller during the Weekend Update section of SNL.
Miller appeared to discuss a science story and explain scientists’ detection of gravitational waves – but was more focused on bashing Super Bowl rival Cam Newton.
Champion: Super Bowl MVP Von Miller also made a surprise appearance during the Weekend Update segment
‘Picture two huge forces slamming together like, say, me and Cam Newton,’ he said.
‘These forces collide and make gravity waves, like when I collided with Cam Newton.
‘These waves are everywhere in the universe, just like I’m everywhere with Cam Newton.
‘This is a huge discovery. No one ever thought it would happen. Kind of like no one thought we would keep the number one offense to just 10 points. Hey, but it happened and it’s amazing.
‘Discovery proves Einstein’s theory that ME = MVP.’
Fun times: The show had a cold open featuring a parody of Bill and Hillary Clinton
